Turbo Options

Just an update…

We got the turbo kit and it’s installed. We’re currently waiting on tuning. EVO is still working out some bugs.

The installation is quite a process. It comes with a 4 layer head gasket so we had to tear down the motor some. And there’s a couple modifications to do the install. The turbo oil drain ties into the dipstick tube, so that has to be cut to install the supplied Y-tube. The clutch exhaust vent has to be cut back to allow for the turbo intake from the filter box and then there’s a scoop to install on it to direct air flow towards the turbo. Turbo oil supply is from a plate mounted behind the engine oil filter pedestal. And there’s intercooler fan signal wire ties into the fuel pump harness.
I was able to use some of the factory heat shielding, and some was supplied, but I feel like a little more is needed on the exhaust pipe right off the turbo. Especially the part closest to the firewall.

For now we’re just waiting for tuning so we can test it before I put all the plastics back together. They gave us a start tune so we could check for leaks and such, but it hasn’t been driven yet.

That sounds like a lot of work, but I don't have any past for context. How is the overall installation in that regard?

It’s definitely a good sized project. Especially with the motor teardown. None of the General or Ranger turbo kits we’d done previously had a head gasket to replace. I am glad they’re doing the 4 layer head gasket though, as it will help with reliability.

Most of it was pretty straightforward, though a couple items took me a bit to figure out, since EVO hasn’t put out instructions or pictures on the Xpedition kits yet. Most of the parts are pretty obvious how they go, others, not so much.

The teardown of the plastics is a bit of a process as well, but the majority of it was stuff I was pulling apart for sound dampening and insulation anyway.

Overall, if you’re comfortable doing motor work, it’s a reasonably sizable job. I’d think 2-3 days if everything was lined up and available. The ADV will be a bit more work than the XP since the entire rear cabin has to be disassembled, whereas there’s just 2 bolts to remove the bed on the XPs.
