Turbo Options

For us, reliability is key. The Xpedition has always felt like it had more to give, but ultimately, it’s a daily driver. I really don’t see anyone building an Xpedition for real racing. The frame alone is too heavy, and the transmission is too low geared. Unless they do an Xpedition class race. 😂
I was considering a turbo but decided against it. Anytime I am in low gear it still amazes me at how good the acceleration is for such a heavy pig. Have used it in Colorado for a year and half now and so far haven't found the need for more power even at altitude.
We typically drive the county roads at 40-45mph and that's around 8000' ASL. Mountain trails we get as high as 14,000' but mainly in low gear on them.

Having said that if Polaris ever comes out with a turbocharged version from the factory I would buy that for our Colorado place and keep this in in Texas.

Yep, I agree however I went up north here in Phoenix to about a 6000 feet elevation and I was in the sand and my car could barely get out of its own way lol

I can’t even imagine what a dog it would be at 8000 feet

I live at 7,000 feet, and the altitude makes a big difference, especially on hills. That’s with everything still stock, including the wheels and tires, so I can’t imagine how it’ll feel once I add long travel and throw on 35s.

Hey, sorry just saw this question mine does have an intercooler I guess how much towing would you be doing? Would be the question for long periods of time?

It's a dedicated snow plow, so front end plow and rear-end salt spreader only.. but, when it's used, I'm using it fro 12+ hours. LOTS to plow.

Xpedition wasn't designed for racing or going fast. With the AA cruiser clutch kit we go 40-50 down the back roads and up in the mountains to 14k feet (Mt Antero).
If we want fast we get in my Turbo R but then again we ust it for rock crawling not racing.

If you bought a Xpedition for racing you bought the wrong SxS

Who say’s xpeditions are supposed to be slow ……
I wanna have fun but different strokes
Ps. I have a x3 if I wanna rip

How does the turbo effect the sound? Does it make the machine louder overall?
Well, first of all turbo in these cars doesn’t make them equal to what a pro R or an X3 is not even close, but it does give it that extra boost that’s nice especially altitude. I don’t believe the turbo actually makes it louder however, if they put on a different exhaust than most, definitely it will be louder and depending on what kit you get, you do feel the heat even more than what the stock vehicle produces

Now that you have some hours on it, is it worth it? I live at 7000', and it struggles to get up long hills, and that's with stock wheels. I don't need a dune racer, but I don't wanna live with my foot on the floor.

A turbo will quiet it down a little. It won’t be much since the majority of the noise isn’t the exhaust. It also depends on your muffler, like @vince.clemens said. If you keep the OEM muffler it’ll be quieter. If you get an aftermarket muffler, it could be the same exhaust noise level or louder, depending on the muffler you go with.

You get the EVO kit yet?

😂😭 No… it has finally shipped though, and should have it Thursday or Friday by the tracking.

I’ve been hard at work doing the build on the Xpedition it’s going on. HCR Mid Travel, Sector Seven Prizm mirrors, Ryco TSK, Rigid 50” light bar, Polaris HD Bumper w/6000# winch, Rigid SR-M Bumper Lights, RBO Bed Rack, Sandcraft driveshaft, and Rugged Radios M1 kit.
As soon as I heard we had shipping confirmation, I pulled the bed, rear firewall, and all the exhaust in prep for the turbo. Now I’m just working on sound dampening and insulation while I wait.

Nice man! Be sure to give us some feedback on the installation and overall thoughts.

I've got my HCR mid-travel and 35s going on next week. If you knew you were going to go with the EVO turbo down the road, would you go ahead and do the clutch kit now? If so, what clutch kit would you go with?

Absolutely! The clutch kit will be changed out for the turbo setup, but it’s a simple process and doesn’t take much time.
But especially with 35”s, your Xpedition will feel gutless with the Polaris comfort clutch. They already feel neutered to me, with 30”s on, after driving mine with 32”s and clutch kit and tune.
We primarily use Aftermarket Assassins for the clutch kits and tunes. They have additional options like the Buttershift Washers and Billet Primary Cover that Gilomen and EVO doesn’t have. Even with the EVO Turbo and Tune we’ll be running the AA clutch kit, just with heavier springs and weights.
One thing you could do in prep is get the EVO ECU stage 1 tune and the Code Shooter tuner. That way, once you do the turbo, the ECU is already unlocked and you’ll only need to download the turbo tune, instead of shipping the ECU off again for a second time for the turbo tune.

Appreciate the advice!

Just an update…

We got the turbo kit and it’s installed. We’re currently waiting on tuning. EVO is still working out some bugs.

The installation is quite a process. It comes with a 4 layer head gasket so we had to tear down the motor some. And there’s a couple modifications to do the install. The turbo oil drain ties into the dipstick tube, so that has to be cut to install the supplied Y-tube. The clutch exhaust vent has to be cut back to allow for the turbo intake from the filter box and then there’s a scoop to install on it to direct air flow towards the turbo. Turbo oil supply is from a plate mounted behind the engine oil filter pedestal. And there’s intercooler fan signal wire ties into the fuel pump harness.
I was able to use some of the factory heat shielding, and some was supplied, but I feel like a little more is needed on the exhaust pipe right off the turbo. Especially the part closest to the firewall.

For now we’re just waiting for tuning so we can test it before I put all the plastics back together. They gave us a start tune so we could check for leaks and such, but it hasn’t been driven yet.
