I replaced one on an Xpedition that did that same thing. I had to cut the rope off behind the fairlead plate to get it to spool. The winch rope got wound so tight it basically melted itself together.
In the end, the winch motor was burned up and had to be replaced.
The customer said the cause was something on the center console fell against the winch switch and held it on winch in. The auto stop had to have failed as well for it to pull in that hard
