Another trip to Sand Mountain in Utah, and after a year and a half of owning the Xpedition I’m still blown away by how versatile these machines are!
From rock crawling to trail riding to ripping the bowls at the dunes, they do it all with ease!

New member here! I am not very familiar with how to use the forum but came across the videos you posted of the sand dunes. Wondered what size tires you run? I have the stock right now on my 2024 xpedition ADV5 ultimate, but have been in Generals with sand paddled tires. Looking for any advice to drain the wallet! Just got back from Moab and then went to the dunes in OK (Wynoka?) and rode with BILs in their General and Razr. Looking forward to seeing what mine can do.

I’m running 32” Maxxis Carnivore tires. 32” and some brands of 33” tires can run on the stock suspension without rubbing. If you want to do larger than that you’ll need long travel suspension or portals. The Xpedition I’m following in one of the videos has the HCR Mid Travel suspension and is running 35” tires. His Xpedition is running stock clutches and stock ECU tune and hasn’t had any issues running the large tires. The Xpedition in the pictures with the paddles also has HCR Mid Travel suspension, but has the Aftermarket Assassins Clutch kit and ECU tune.

Did you feel like you could do those dunes easily with the 32s or did you decide you would want to do a long travel kit to get bigger tires? I watched your video and enjoyed the ride, but did you come back thinking you needed to upgrade or you were fine with what you had?

Oh it did phenomenal with the 32”s. I was running the tires at 7-8 psi and the Xpedition had plenty of power for ripping the bowls. I don’t really want any larger tires on it.
There was an Xpedition with HCR and 35” tires there also (right in front of me in the third video). His had the stock clutches and stock ECU tune. Same deal, his machine had no problems running the dunes.

I think the main thing I’ve done that makes sand dune running better is getting my suspension dialed in. I’ve re-springed to get the proper ride height for the weight of my machine and got the nitrogen pressure set properly. I do still need to get some shock tuning done. Currently, level 1 on all the shocks was perfect for the dunes, which means I want that compression level to be at the level 3 setting.

I’ve also driven my Xpedition all over Sand Hollow state park in southern Utah, which is way softer and drier sand than Sand Mountain, and it’s done exceptionally well there too.

For all the types of riding I do, the 32s have been perfect.

My BIL has a general with 30s on it. He did MOAB both the rocky side and the slick rock side just fine. I think the 32s would work better for the expedition. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer. This helps me a lot.

Would you mind telling me what rims you went with? Did you go with a wider tire too or 32 10 15 rim size? I really don't know that much about it. I thought I should get sand paddle tires for the dunes out in OK. I have ridden in generals and razrs that had them and they did great. Rode in one that had regular tires (razr) and it could not climb at all. Have you ever thought about paddles?

S5 - Beadlock - Silver RZR PRO R 5X4.5 by Ultra-light

That offset put my Xpedition at 72” overall width. For reference, the last Xpedition we built, with HCR Mid Travel suspension and Method 5/2 offset wheels is 74” overall width. I like the wider stance but didn’t want the expense of doing long travel. And yes, 32/10R15 Maxxis Carnivore tires.

I had thought about sand tires a little and was considering the System 3 SS360 but since I only do strictly dune trips 1-2 times a year, I really don’t need them. The Carnivores get me pretty much everywhere I want to go on the dunes, so no point in buying an extra set of wheels and tires.

The one thing I will suggest is beadlock wheels for running in the sand. You can let the tires down to 6-8 psi and that will make nearly any tire do decent in the sand. With non-beadlocks you’ll likely pop the tires off the bead at those low pressures.

There were some guys talking about 5"+5" and I could not understand what they meant on the FB page for xpedition mods until I saw a picture. Hard for a girl to get into this world lol. All of a sudden, it made sense what you guys have been saying. You are getting the extra width because the rim has the part where it connects to the lug pushed inward so the tire is more outward. An "Ah Bach" moment. So glad you took the time to explain this to me. I will probably go to the dunes once a year also, so what you did makes more sense. Headed to go take a look now. THANK YOU
 
I went to the website on your link. My husband likes these. Would these work on the XP? I have the same model/color as you have. I see you went with 15 7. Does that mean the tire is 7" wide? I have 30 15 10's currently, so would want to maybe do the 15 ll? Does this rim give me the offset like yours?

Hate to be a pain, but will these work? My husband wants an all black rim. This was the best I could find. I wanted to do 32" tires and have the offset like yours. Beadlocks too. 10" tire. Not sure if I accomplished this with this wheel. Could you tell me if this does it? So thankful for helpful people!

Factory wheels on the Xpedition are 7” wide with a 6/1 offset. Factory tires are 10” wide on the front and 11” wide on the rear.
Going to aftermarket tires, they’re 10” wide tires both front and rear.

On SxSs, 10” wide wheels are typically only used on the rear for paddle tires.

To my knowledge, Packard wheels are the only ones with what they call the 3.5/3.5 offset. Packard measures from the inside of the wheel to the point the center plate bolts to the wheel, meaning the true offset is an inch deeper to the hub face. Other wheel manufacturers measure from the inside of the wheel to the hub face. So what Packard calls a 5/2 offset, other manufacturers would call a 4/3 offset. Also, some manufacturers base the offset off the center of the wheel rather than the inner edge, which is what those KMC wheels appear to do. It can get a little confusing 😂

Overall, a 15x7 wheel is what is best for a 32/10R15 tire.

The offset numbers are the division of the width of the wheel in relation to the hub face. For example 5/2 is 5” of the wheel behind the hub and 2” outside the hub surface. (Except for Packards)
Typically, the ones with a mm offset number is plus or minus the measurement from the center of the wheel to the hub surface.

did you have to purchase the tires separately and then have them mounted? I only see sand paddles on the packard performance website. Is there a place you can purchase the wheel and the tire you have already mounted and shipped?

You would need to purchase the tires and wheels separately and then have a shop mount them for you if you don’t want to do the mounting yourself.

Beadlock wheels are relatively easy to mount tires on but a little labor intensive. They don’t require a tire machine or even tire bars to mount, but you do need to know how to properly do beadlocks.

Some regular tire shops won’t do beadlock wheels but Powersports dealers and off-road shops generally will.
