RPMs

Probably should not say this, but I pay attention to speed and sound of drivetrain, not RPMs. I will look this weekend when I hit the trail again and reply on Sunday.
By the way, the Xpedition is my first SXS or ORV.

Just for a PSA, running a constant rpm for long periods will cause premature wear to the clutches. Usually it will wear a groove in the sheaves, and in one case, I’ve seen it wear notches in the clutch weights.
Stock, the Xpedition motor is governed around 7800 rpm. Most ECM tunes will open it up to 9000 rpm. I have the Gilomen ECM tune and clutch kit, with the clutch weighted to peak around 8600 rpm until it’s fully shifted out. All of that is perfectly ok for the motor.

Note I tried to note these in the same kind of terrain: relatively flat, packed dirt or less than 5" rocks. In High gear, 3500 at 15mph; 5000 at 30mph. In Low gear, 5000 at 15mph; 6000 at 25mph. Visual observations as I was driving, not written down or photoed.
My X was delivered on 29 June 2024, and i was told it has the updated comfort clutch in it from the factory.
I would love to know what the experts think of the RPMs I am seeing.

For anyone who’s curious,

The weight on the left is the standard clutch weight and the one on the right is Polaris’ Comfort Clutch weight. Everything else with the clutch is the same

Rpm really comes down to personal preference. Some prefer the lower rpm and don’t mind a little loss of performance in exchange for slightly less noise.
For my own, and 10+ others that I’ve worked on, higher rpm and performance. Got another 2 Xpeditions in the shop right now for tunes and clutching, among other things.

Thanks JT, So far I like the performance, and I can keep it under control - which in the end is what we all want I believe!

Can some one tell me the standard clutch weight in grams and the grams of the comfort weight that they went to. Thanks

CAR, welcome to the forum! I can't answer your question but I am sure others can.

A lot of good information here. I appreciate it. Like I said I was new to this machine and just wasn't sure. I'm assuming these engines can take the high RPMs. I do like the performance. It's very snappy.

It appears that all the new Xpeditions are coming from the factory with the comfort clutch weights installed. I’m on the second Xpedition straight from the dealer to my shop and both have had them.
Looks like anyone wanting the performance will have to do a clutch kit. 🤷‍♂️

I have a new ADV northstar two seater with 32" tires I ended up grinding off 3 grams from the Polaris comfort weight which gave me about 200-300 more rpms through the rev range which I feel is a better balance for performance and noise on the average I picked up one DB. Over all I am much happier with the machine.

Does anyone have the Polaris part number for the "comfort" clutch weight? I just bought a used 2024 and it revs really high.

The Prostar II engine in the Xpedition is designed for high rpms. It can rev to 9000 for short periods without damage and the peak performance is in the 7800-8500 rpm range.

However, if you’re not concerned with performance and hoping to quiet it down a little, you can talk to any Polaris dealer and they should give you the comfort weights, if not install them without cost.

Also I have 3-4 sets of the “Comfort Clutch weights that we’ve pulled out of machines we’ve done clutch tuning on. I can send you a set if you want to pay shipping.

Wow, thank you JT! I'll let you know. If I get time today I'm going to call the local dealer and see what they say. Yes, I'm aware of the trade off here. Al

You seem very knowledgeable JT. I have a related question on the noise issue. I was planning to pull the rear seat and get those panels for the firewall and air intakes out. Then I planned to line the parts with automotive stick on sound deadening. Any input on this? Thanks again. Al
