Rugged Radios M1 Radio install - Xpedition ADV 5 Northstar

Installed this Rugged Radio and antenna a little different than they illustrate for these Xpedition’s. I think it turned out pretty sweet. The radio location doesn’t even bother my wife. No COM system, just an amplified speaker mounted to rear view mirror with a Rugged designed mount. I made the Mic mount.
Antenna is mounted to driver side mirror mount. This clears our 8’ roll up garage door.
I will probably do a how to write up for this installation.

BaoFeng Radio. I also use Cardo wireless headsets that work with RideCommand and my cell phone.

Our off road groups have shifted from CB to HAM Baofeng radios, in a full size truck we usually need an exterior antenna to get the signal out of the steel cab. Better range, less disturbance, more channels to pick from. Does the handheld Baofeng get out of the EXP ok? I have to test, but I like the setup you have for in there John, is that Rugged radio CB?
 
They call the Rugged M1 business channel. It’s what they use for off -road racing. I think it’s UHF. they make another one, GMRS. I’m not familiar with that one. These Rugged ones are almost 50 watt.
 
Ok, GMRS is like 25 preset channels , but it is UHF. Any HAM radio can tune to that specific channel, and it’s all safe to use without a HAM license…which would allow you about a million other frequencies but not everyone has that license. Thanks again!!!!
 
Question on the RR setup? With both GMRS and VHF offered, what is the majority of people using for the UTV? Does the RR GMRS commuincte with a Midland handheld GMRS unit?
I ask this as most of my group will not spend the money for the RR setup, I don't mind if as I like their setup best as long as I can use it with the others.

New to the forum, how did you run your antenna cable through the side view mirror?
 
This is a look inside the mirror plastic mount and the coaxial cable as it’s routed forward under hood. Don’t coil it up anywhere on its path down to the radio. There is enough cable but not to much for this application.
I’m going to write up this installation on a pdf. It turned out really nice for this vehicle.
